Honor of a Thief - Aiden 1

The carriage bounced along, Aiden sat inside, glaring at the upholstery. She had been called back to the capitol by her parents from the small country estate that Aiden favored. A few days prior, a messenger had arrived weary from this long journey from the capitol to the estate that was nestled in a bay on the outskirts of the seaside city of Morgan. In the letter he carried her parents had told her that she was to return as soon as possible to their home in the capitol, Sedona. They were planning on presenting to court their only child and heir on her eighteenth birthday, in three months time. Unfortunately, there was no way Aiden could resist answering the summons. She was being forced to give up her haven, where she could ride her favorite horse on the coast, or study late into the night with out having to bother with social obligations. She had enjoyed the freedom that pants and a loose tunic had provided her, all of which she had been forced to give up for binding dresses now that she was headed back to the capitol.

The tight stays of her dress along with the bumping from the carriage made her back ache. She grimaced as she sat up straighter, and her stomach growled. They had woken very early that morning so that they could reach the capitol by early afternoon. The merchant caravan she was with had agreed to take her along, so that the rest of the small household could stay behind and finish the preparations to move back. They would follow a week later, but Aiden had to leave right away. Her heart longed to be back on the sprawling estate, left alone with her horse and her beloved books.

Even Cinnamon, her chestnut mare was gong to be returning with the rest to the household. It was not proper for a young lady of her station to ride for days, and then enter into the capitol astride a horse. Lost in her musings, she barley noted the carriage stopping, one of the horses had probably thrown a shoe.

Still scowling at the opposite wall she tried to think of excuses hat would help her get out of the capitol and back to her freedom as soon as possible. Hearing more shouts than was common for a small trifle as a thrown shoe, and feeling the prickling sensation of being watched, she pulled herself out of her longings, and turned around to get out of the carriage, but stopped short. Standing outside was a man whose face was shrouded by clothes draped around his head, leaving a slit that his laughing green eyes peered out of. He seemed to take everything in, while focusing on her.

She glared at him, glad she was sitting and that she had a dress to hide her traitorous knees that shook.

"Who are you? And what do you want?" Aiden asked, proud that her voice didn't tremble. She saw his skin crinkle around his eyes, as if he were smiling....Was he laughing at her? What did she say? Was he laughing at some cruel joke he was going to play on her? But his eyes didn't look vicious, What did he want with her? She had brought nothing of value to him. Hidden at the bottom of her trunks were all of her favorite books. She had packed all of her clothing on top of them in an effort to hide them from her parents, who said she spent way too much time with her nose between the pages of a book.

Honor of a Thief - Aiden 2

She had packed all of her clothing on top of them in an effort to hide them from her parents, who said she spent way too much time with her nose between the pages of a book. He had still not answered her questions. Confused she asked "Well....?" Turning away from her he called for two of his men. Immediately two appeared, their faces masked like his. One of them called him "Your Majesty"... he that one told to stay and watch her, but he was not to touch her, then he and the other man left. He moved with a cat like grace. Who was this man? He didn't look much older than she was. And why was he called "your majesty"? Surly this man wasn't a king. She felt trunks being lifted from the rack on the end of the carriage. Her books! She must keep them away from them! What if he took them? What would she do while she was stuck at court without anything to distract her? She would go stark raving mad, that's what. All of the Balls, and social functions, she would go crazy. She had to stop him. She would not be able to survive with out her books.

Without stopping to think, she gathered up her skirts and all of the courage she could muster, and got out. Completely ignoring her "guard" Aiden walked straight backed with her chin held high, coming around the back she saw his "majesty" getting ready to hand down her worn trunks to another. "Don't you dare touch those." She told him, trying to put a commanding tone to her voice. "And why would I do that?" He responded. He was laughing at her! She heard it in his voice! "Because," She told him, "those cases are mine, and I don't want you poking through them." Please let him go, take anything but leave the books please! What would he do? Would he take them just because she asked him not to? What could she do if he did? She would not grovel in front of this man... but if it might save her books...She looked into his almost familiar green eyes, and saw laughter, not malice. "Well lads, I do believe we can afford to leave these ones to the lady." These words sent waves of relief flooding through her. She watched as the men loaded her trunks back onto the rack, and followed the man with the laughing eyes back to the carriage door. He opened it for her with a ridiculously extravagant bow, and as she got in, she tried to convey her gratitude without words. He and the other man walked away, leaving the younger one to once again stand outside her door. She gazed out the window, trying to figure out where she had seen eyes like his. About a quarter of an hour later, her guard disappeared, and was soon replaced by her nervous driver. She looked out of the small window, but saw no sign of the thieves. All up and down the line, the merchants were getting back behind their teams, a few looking a little ruffled. Her carriage started driving with a jolt; she sat back and continued to wonder at the man with the laughing eyes. Who was he, and why did he leave her trunks alone when he could have taken everything? She would have to ask some of her friends in merchant and guard guilds about him when she got to the capitol.

She danced another two times before the evening finally came to an end. She couldn’t remember the young men’s names, but they had been pleasant and polite enough. She was fairly certain they only danced with her because they thought she was Phoebe’s cousin and their mothers told them to.

-----

So Aiden did what so many rich girls did when confronted with a situation they did not want to face. She rolled her eyes back into her head and pretended to faint.

-----

She spun her stave and struck me in the backs of the knees, smacking the joint with enough force to bruise. I tumbled to the ground, teeth set against the moment of pain.

-----

“Listen to me, Aiden. He’s not a bad guy like your dad and Uncle Eddie are bad guys.” He took a deep breath. “Like I’m a bad guy. This guy? His name’s Arturo Taccone, and he’s a whole different kind of bad.”

-----

“Are you ever going to call me Kat, Marcus?”
“Not today, miss.” He repeated softly, “Not today.”

-----

The man who opened the door reminded Kat oddly of Marcus, the way he wordlessly took her wet coat and softly asked her to follow. There were marble floors and chandeliers, fresh flowers, and fires burning in two of the four rooms she passed. But there were no stacks of mail lying on tables, no coats or scarves hung carelessly on the backs of chairs. It was a place that valued beauty and order in equal measure, Kat knew. So she stayed quiet, following her guide toward a set of double doors more intimidating than the drawbridge. She stood silent, waiting for an audience with Arturo Taccone.

-----

Pretend and it will be true.

-----

Will snarled something Aiden couldn’t hear. She hoped it was rude. She tried to twist away from Jace. Her feet slipped and he caught her, yanking her back with agonizing force.

---
Aiden wondered if Isabelle’s propensity for unsuitable footwear was genetic.

-----

Dasha sat on a rock and sighed. “Now, shall we just sit or would you like me to blather?”
“Blather please.” “With pleasure.”

----

“I hate them,” Enna said. “Whoever is responsible for making me sleep outside without pillows, I hate them.”
“Mmm-hmmm . . . ,” Dasha said. Rin had noticed that the Tiran girl often had trouble remembering how to speak in the morning.
“If Finn were here,” Enna continued to mumble as she rewrapped her head cloth, “he’d let me rest my head on his chest at night. Or leg. Or arm. And then he’d find whoever was responsible for the whole sleeping outside with no pillows situation and hold him while I kicked him in the shins.”
“Hmm . . . ,” said Dasha.
“In the shins. Hard.”
“Just don’t you let go of that lofty dream, Enna,” said Isi. “Four or five days to Kel, where we just might have time for some shin kicking.”

----

‘Would you like me to stop talking? Because I can. I have to concentrate, but it’s possible.’

---

“Why, I’m just as true and honest as dirt."Jon said " And I’m even more charming than dirt.”

Honor of a Thief Ch1

Will's brow furrowed as he surveyed his court. At age 18 he was the youngest King of Thieves in memory. William was known as the "Sly One" by the courtiers of the Tricksters Court. He reigned over the underground world with a light but firm hand. His predecessor had grown greedy during his reign, and became oppressive, even for world of outlaws. Will had won his crown in a fight to the death, and now ruled over a court much different from the last. As his gaze traveled around the room, he spotted Jonathan, his right hand man in the mist of a crowd, the entertainer, as per usual. Will almost thought of renaming him Jester. He had yet to find a person who could not be charmed by Jon's beautiful face and quick wit. They had been fast friends ever since Will's first day in the city. It had been Jonathan's introduction that got him entrance to the Tricksters Court in the first place. All though Will was plain where Jon was not, and the two were apparently opposites, they were as close as brothers. Both had often entrusted their lives in the others hands.

Will sighed; it had been a long day. The rival kingdom that neighbored the Tricksters Court to the north had been poaching on their territory and had ruffed up two flower girls belonging to his court that morning. Standing and stretching, he signaled to Jon that he was off to bed. They had a big merchant's caravan that was due to enter the city tomorrow, and he wanted to alert for the job. Trudging up the stairs trough one of the many secret entrances to his chambers, he felt as if he had been king for decades instead of a mere year and a half. Stripping off his boots and shirt, he set them on a chair, and fell into his bed.

Although tired, his mind would not slow down. Will reached for a silver signet ring set with an emerald in the center, which hung on a leather thong about his throat, thinking of his dead mother. Growing up she had been his whole world. After his father had died, they both had to work on the docks of Erised, in an effort to make ends meet. All though they would come home bone weary the end of each day, his mom always had time to listen to him talk about his day. He could never remember time with out her having her ring on. He remembered asking repeatedly about it. All she would say is that her father gave it to her, and the green stone was to match her green eyes, the same bright green that her son had inherited. She would never say anything else about her family. All Will knew about his extended family was that his mother had a twin sister, who had an identical ring with a blue stone. So when she had died from the plague, he was left alone in the world. Having just turned twelve, he was old enough to find work as a cabin boy on one of the many ships that traded in Erised. He was hired by a monster of a man named George who was the first mate on the ship called the Phoenix. George had taken the young man under his wing and gave him a vast education. Under the tutelage of an ex-thief, Will learned not only about the sea fairing life, but to pick pockets, slight of hand, and how to use his own set of lock picks. Having learned to read and write from his mother Will borrowed each of the books George kept in his sailor's trunk until he knew them all by heart. As Will drifted off to sleep, he longed for the two people that had taught him so much.

Honor of a Thief Ch2

He woke as usual with the rising of the sun and started warming up. Will ran through the kicks and jabs of hand to hand fighting, flowing seamlessly from one to the next in a deadly dance. After finishing, he washed and pulled on his clothes and his favorite boots. He had had them made specially and they made no noise as he walked down stairs. The tavern known as the Raven was the palace for the Tricksters Court, and home to the Sly One. Down in the main room, some of his band was getting ready to meet the caravan with Will. "Morning, Majesty" mumbled a few sleepy voices as he entered. Most of his foke were not morning people, preferring to do their work under the cover of night. Will's ears picked up the tread of soft feet coming around the back of the tall chair that he used as his throne. Slipping his hand to his side, and removing a thin blade he waited for the person who was going through such a great effort to be silent. He suddenly recognized the sent of aloe mixed with lavender coming from the hiding person, and called softly "Morning Gabrielle." She came gliding out from behind him, "Darn you!" her pretty face showing her frustration, "How did you know it was me?!? I was being so quiet this time!" Will just smiled, and let her pout as she sauntered down to her place at the table.

As he stood, silence fell across the room. All faces turned towards him, waiting for their assignments. After he had given everyone their instructions, they finished getting ready. The thieves rapped long bits of cloth around their heads, leaving only their eyes visible and saddling up their horses along with one team pulling a cart. Will mounting his black mare named shadow, led the way out of town. As they reached the appointed spot, the band disappeared silently into the forest on either side of the road, tying their horses a way back, and creeping up to hide in the undergrowth, waiting.

The sounds of many hooves and wagon wheels reached their ears. Will checked all of his blades, and balanced himself on the balls of his feet, waiting for the merchants to draw nearer. As the head of the caravan drew level with him, Will launched himself at the man's big horse, dragging him off. The others attacked, some grabbing the reigns of the horses, while others tackled the drivers, and pulling them over to the side of the road tying them to the sturdy trees on the side of the road. A few were roughed up; if they caused too much trouble, but none were killed those were the orders from the King.

The first vehicle in the caravan was a coach with a single passenger. The thieves looked to Will questioning, the driver had been taken care of, but what was to be done with the young lady sitting inside? Will glanced inside, noting the finely adorned interior and searched the girls face. She had high cheek bones, blue eyes, and a stubborn chin. All framed by masses of brown hair so dark it almost looked black. Sensing his gaze, the young woman turned to look at Will. Her penetrating glare took in every thing, from his covered face down to his well worn leather boots. "Who are you and what do you want?" She asked in clipped tones. Will stared not knowing what to make of her. He smiled under his mask, amused at this sprightly young merchant's daughter. There was no way she was a noble, what kind of father would let his well bred daughter out on a country road without any guards or supervision? Even a baron would have more care than that. "Well..?" She prompted. Will turned away, not bothering to answer her questions and called Jon and Evan over to him. "Evan, I want you to stay here, and make sure this one doesn't get into any trouble, but don't touch her." He said, nodding towards the young girl. Evan nodded turned to stand in front of the carriage door. Jon followed Will as he walked around to the back of the carriage, and helping unload the trunks off of the back.

All down the line, the thieves were unloading carts, and finding anything that might be of value, although they would leave enough for the merchants to not be completely ruined. Jon and Will started into the trunks going through the caravan leader's personal trunk, and starting to hand down finely worked leather caring cases, that had to be the young girls. In a swirl of silk, the merchant's daughter came around the back followed by a harried looking Evan. "Don't you dare touch those." She said her steely eyes flashing. "And why would I do that?" Will responded, amazed by her audacity. "Because," She stated, "those cases are mine, and I don't want you poking through them." His green eyes dancing, he turned to Jon and Evan trying to keep the laughter out of his voice, "Well lads, I do believe we can afford to leave these ones to the lady." Grinning, he and Jon hefted the trunks back on to the carriage. Gesturing for Evan and the girl to follow, he walked around to the door of the carriage, and with an elaborate bow he helped her back inside, leaving Evan to once again guard the door. After the little incident with the spunky young woman, the rest of the raid went smoothly. When they were done, they untied the caravan, and sent them on their way, not much worse for the morning's events. After they had loaded up their cart with all the goods, so kindly given by the caravan, they started back to the Raven where they would divide up their goods.

Honor of a Thief Ch3

The merchant's haul had been followed closely by two more prosperous attacks and as a result, Will decided to give his thieves a week off. Just as the revelries had gotten under way on their second day of relaxation, James burst into the Raven were most of the celebrations were being held, followed closely by one of the older members of the tricksters court, known as the professor. The boisterous crowd fell silent as the two men hurried towards will. Evan how had been standing by the bar, hurried over to hand his brother and Professor cold mugs of water. The two men gulped down the contents. James set his mug down giving a quick nod of thanks to his brother. Leaning closer to will he said, "They kidnapped Gabrielle and the daughter of the Duke of the North." There was a collective intake of breath as the room reeled with the audacity of Roger and his upstart group of thieves.

The country was ruled buy a king, who was greatly influenced by his four dukes; North, South, East and West. Although he land ruled by the four was roughly even, the Duke of the North held the most power. His boarders encompassed two of the countries largest port cities as well as the countries most fertile farmland. Will met John's eyes which were burning in rage. Quickly Will scanned the room, nodding at those men who would help him teach Roger a lesson he would not soon forget. "'Skews me ladies and gents, we've got to take care of a slight problem," he said as he motioned for cooper the barman, "the rounds on me." Slipping out the back door into one of the many smaller rooms off of the main room. He was followed by his den hand chosen men and one lady, known as Doll face for her stunning good looks. Waving for them to take a seat around the scrubbed wooden table he passed in front of them. The room was silent except for the muffled noise filtering in from down the hall.

"Doll, I need you, Pick and Eric to find out where they are keeping Gabrielle and the Nobel." Will had chosen Pick and Eric for their non-descript appearances and stealth. Doll, with her stunning red hair, would go along to provide a distraction.

"We need to know their location as soon as we can so that we can get the Duke his daughter back before he brings the house down around our ears."

The group chuckled, quietly amused at the thought of the Duke of the North, who was notoriously clean, coming to the city and trying to find them. The Raven was a thriving bar which was guarded by the watchful eyes of the members of Tricksters Court. Anyone who was not welcome would have a hard time getting within two blocks of the place.

He nodded to the three as they slipped outside. Turning to the remaining group, he said "I need the rest of you to scourer our land and pick up anyone who doesn't belong. Find a partner from in here, or…" he said waving his hand towards the main room "out there. Make sure you take someone who you can trust your life to, because to pull this little trick off, Roger must have a few people inside our court." They all exchanged looks felling sorry for the poor souls who were interloping on their court, by the time Will got done with them, there would not be a lot to return to Roger. But it was their own fault, ignoring the previous fates of those who crossed him.

"Those of you, who find spies, bring them back here and deposit them in the far shed out back. I will warn Cooper what you will be bringing back."

As his people turned to leave, Will tapped Professor's shoulder before he could follow the others out.

"I have something else for you to do old friend." Will said.

Once the room was emptied Will turned to Professor, "I know who you are."

Professor smiled, his eyes merry behind their wrinkles, and said, "I know you do lad, it is your job to know."

Will smiled back, clapping his hand on the shoulder of the Duke of the East. Professors land was the most rugged quarter of the country, but also some of the most beautiful. His land bordered the Grand Mountains, which separated the country form the neighboring Silmet tribes, whose warlords had yet to cross the formidable peaks on their conquests.

"Your Grace," Will said "I need you tot tell North that we will get his daughter back as soon as we can. You might also want to bring bore weapons and men into the capitol from you estates."

At the raise to the Duke's eyebrows, Will explained, "Roger is up to something, and I have herd whispers that he is dealing with the Kyrin's."

The Duke let out a low whistle. Th Kyrins were raised from the cradle as solders, and whose loyalty could be bought by the highest bidder.

"Otis curse him" the duke said "How soon are you expecting trouble to come?"

Will was surprised by such strong words issuing from such a well bred man and answered, "I am not sure, but I could ask my thieves outside the capitol." Then after a pause Will asked "How is the fire steel coming?"

"Its not." Said the Duke scowling. "We cant get ours any where near as flexible or as strong as the blades from Kyrin. Any blade that we produce that is as flexible enough wont hold an edge for more than a few passes, and if we try to make them as strong as the Kyrins, they shatter at the first hard hit. If we could just get a good look at their blades then we might have a chance of duplicating it, but you know how secretive they are about that steel, and for good reason, normal swords look like children's toys in comparison. And the only soldiers of ours that have gotten close enough to get a good look at them are no longer in any position to tell us how they might have been forged."

Both men had seen glimpses of the famed fire steel whose blade was not the dull sheen of normal steel, but had fingers of light and dark steel which produced a sword sharper and stronger than normal blades which constantly broke under it's influence.

The Duke nodded in a preoccupied way and said, "I'll take care of North, just make sure you get those girls back…soon." He left through the back door and a few seconds later Will herd the clatter of horse shoes against the cobble stones.

Will strode back into the main room to talk to Cooper about the "guests" that would be arriving.

Later that night Will heard a knock on his door. He had spent most of the day questioning those spies that his people had managed to bring back, and had finally gone up to get ready for the next day when the knock sounded. His hand went to the hilt of the dagger that he kept at the small of his back and opened the door to find Doll and Eric standing in the hall. As he stepped aside to let them in he asked "Where is Pick?"

"We had a little encounter with Roger's men" said Eric as he sat down in one to the stools against the wall.

In response to Will's q questioning glance Doll laughed and said "Don’t worry your Majesty; they aren't in any position to alert Roger." A feral grin grew on her lovely face, and Will smiled in return, knowing that they had enjoyed themselves.

"Pick is down being stitched up by Cooper and his lass, who seems to have a talent for doctoring." She said.

Will knew that Coopers oldest daughter Melinda had been studying with a local healer and had shown a real aptitude for it.

"But we found them" said Eric "They are in a store room at a warehouse down by the docks. It’s the big one down on Waterfront, the abandoned one down at the far end of the row. But if we want to lift them from there, we will have to do it soon. We herd one of the guards saying that they were getting loaded on a ship in the morning. He didn’t say where they were headed though."

"How well is it guarded?" asked Will.

"They have guards on the streets and two inside the warehouse, but the idiots didn’t put anyone on the roofs, so that will probably be the best way in." Eric said as he shook his head at the stupidity of some people.

Doll nodded in agreement and added "We can escape from roof to roof if the girls are well enough to run."

"Well," Will said "then lets not waste anymore time, daylight is coming soon. Do you need that looked at?" He asked motioning to the cut on Eric's shoulder. Eric shook his head and heaved himself out of the stool to come and stand by Will.

"No" he said. "We'll have time to that later."

Will lead Doll and Eric down stairs, as they reached the kitchen they were handed a coup of strong hot tea by Melinda who said, "Drink."

Pick tried to sit up as they walked in, but was pushed back on to the table where he was lying by Cooper.

"Cooper," Will said "is Jon back?"

"No Majesty, he came back about an hour ago, but left as soon as he delivered his load in the shed."

Will swore under his breath, he had been counting on Jon's help to get the girls out, but they would make do with Eric and Doll. He could not risk taking any one else until he know his court was free of Roger's men.

He forced himself to set his mug down gently, curbing the impulse to use words that he shouldn’t in front of Melinda and Doll, although he knew Doll would scoff at his persistent and "unnecessary" as she termed it, politeness.

Motioning for Eric and Doll to follow him out of the yard he said, "It will have to be the three of us, they need to be gone by tomorrow, and with Rogers men slinking around…" he left off not wanting to loose his temper when so much was at stake.

Doll and Eric nodded their understanding and as they readied their horses he went to Stoneheart's stall, when he had acquired Stoneheart, he thought it a great joke to call him by the nickname given to one of the nations most celebrated Peace Keeper. Heart butted Will in the chest as he tightened the saddle straps and checked all of his weapons, making sure they were secure and easily accessible.

When he saw that they were ready he tossed himself in the saddle, the cloth muffled hooves making almost no sound as they galloped into the courtyard and out the gates. They made good time as they wove throughout the deserted city, finally arriving at the outskirts of Dockside. They left the horses tied in an ally with a red sash secured around the poll where they were tethered indicating to all of the cities underworld that these animals were to be left alone, then slipped into the road, slowly making their way through the deepest shadows towards the warehouse. A block away from their target, they climbed up to the roof of a shipping company, using a ladder that Eric, Doll and Pick had left earlier. Once on the roofs, they shed their dark cloaks to gain more freedom of movement and slipped across the roofs of Dockside, finally coming to the Cloth Guild's storehouse that neighbored the abandoned one at the end of Waterfront Street.

They stopped and crouched down behind the waist high barrier that encircled the roof.

"Eric, I want you to lead, you know the layout. Doll, I need you to stay up here and watch our backs." He hated having to put his people in more danger than absolutely necessary, but he had no other choice. Doll looked unhappy at the thought of being left behind but he knew that she understood the necessity of leaving a lookout behind.

Glancing over the edge of the wall, Will took note of the positions and movements of the men below. Motioning for Eric and Doll of get ready, Will waited until the men on the street were looking away, then sprang across the narrow ally between the buildings, landing and rolling to absorb the noise. The other two followed, making the most of the over confident guards below. Stooping low on the roof of the abandoned warehouse they slunk across the deserted roof, making their way to the stairs that led to the lower level. Reaching the door the pulled it open slowly to avoid any noise made by the rusted hinges, Will nodded to Doll as he followed Eric and slipped inside.

They crept down the stairs their custom fitted boots leaving only slight disturbances in the thick dust that covered the wood. Reaching the ground floor Will saw crates stacked all around the walls labeled in Kyrin. Through the dusty moonlight that made its way in between the cracks in the weathered planks of the walls he could read enough to know that the crates contained armor and small weapons as well as army rations, at this the growing unease in the pit of his stomach turned to a rock.

Quickly Will followed Eric to where he was crouching over a trop door nestled in the worn wooden floor. As they lifted the door, it opened onto a dark pit, whose darker than night shadows revealed no movement. Will swung himself through the hole and dropped onto the pressed dirt of the floor. Almost at once, he was assailed by a small figure who cam flying at his back from out of the dark. The fray was quickly joined by Eric and between them they pinned the struggling person against the wall. Through their silent but spirited struggle, Will noticed that the figure had never let him or Eric get close to the corner where he could see a dark shape was huddled. The struggling person slumped against the wall where it was held, and Eric, leaving their captive to Will, reached inside his pack to retrieve a small red-tinted lantern that he quickly lit.

Then, as dim light blossomed in the dank little room, Will tensed in surprise. The figure that he had pressed against the rough stone wall was the same young lady whose caravan they had stopped months ago.

Scene?

Valek slowly set his daggers on the floor and held his hands up.

“And the rest,” she said.

He removed a few more weapons, but left the darts, lock picks and a few other surprises in place. She ordered him to turn around and put his hands on the wall. Doing as instructed, Valek knew exactly what would happen next. Even though he braced for the blow, the impact sent him to his knees as blackness claimed him.

A dagger of pain stabbed him between the eyes. Valek groaned and touched the back of his head, fingering a tender fist-sized lump. Nausea churned in his stomach. He lay still to keep from losing his supper.

-----

He wanted to prove his point. After what seemed like a lifetime of blows to my ribs, stomach and back, he did. Passing out was the best thing to happen to me all day.

-----

“Aiden, you are a goddess. I will carve your likeness in mashed potatoes so all can worship you like I do. When you leave Philip, will you marry me?” Jon said.

-----

“Nobles,” said Jon, as if it were the filthiest word he knew, and threw himself into the oncoming horde.

---

“Meanwhile,” Jon added, “I wanted to tell you that lately I’ve been cross-dressing. Also, I’m sleeping with your mom. I thought you should know.”
Will shot him a frown.
"Kidding." Jon said, "Just making sure you were paying attention."

----

Every dish he owned, except the two teacups and the teapot Aislinn had bought him, went smashing into the wall. Then, he punched the wall until his knuckles were bloodied. It didn’t help, but it felt a lot more satisfying than anything else he could think to do just then.
